Metallic Stabilizer-free, Environmental Friendly Medium Phosphorus Electroless Nickel

In plating on parts with high complexity, electrodeposited nickel shows various in thickness easily due to the character of current distribution. However, electroless nickel is an autocatalytic plating and no current in part during reaction. Therefore, it performs very uniform deposition as a benefit to applications to aerospace, automotive, electronics, and industrial. To build a formula of electroless nickel bath, there are four ingredients necessary: nickel sulfate, reduction agent, chelator which promotes the reaction, and stabilizer which maintain bath’s stability.

Normally both metallic and organic stabilizer systems are used in electroless nickel. A good metallic stabilizer system makes nickel to deposit on activated surface of part only, suppresses precipitation of nickel on tank or other surface in order not to cause the excess consumption or breakdown. Mostly toxic metal ions like cadmium, lead, and antimony, are applied to conventional electroless nickel because those ions feature not only strong stabilizer but also outstanding brightener in bath. Nevertheless, since RoHS have been adopted by EU in 2003, the content of toxic metals in products has been limited strictly thus the electroless nickel have advanced to cadmium- and lead-free generation. As environmental policy becomes serious, more and more substances are limited in the restriction. Antimony, one of stabilizers in common electroless nickel, is showed in candidate list of substances of very high concern by EU’s regulation of REACH. In addition, more metallic substances are forbidden for sustainability that required by many corporations in automotive or consumer electronic market. Hence the most important topic in metal finishing now is that whether the substances in electroless nickel bath and coating are permitted by customers and end-users.


To eliminate the risk of metallic compounds from coating layer, we develop MetChem 6836, the all-organic bright medium phosphorus electroless nickel. Withdraw all metallic stabilizer from bath, leave only nickel and phosphorus in deposition and satisfy all requirements for concern or forbidden substances.

Theoretically speaking electroless nickel bath is much unstable if there is no metallic stabilizer. Nevertheless, MetChem 6836’s special formula does increase the stability of all-organic electroless nickel obviously. MetChem 6836 performs 7 to 9 MTOs in production, 5 to 7 MTOs for plating on aluminum alloy, regular deposit rate and phosphorus content. Moreover, this pit-free coating layer present the same brightness as metallic stabilizer bright medium phosphorus electroless nickel attributed to MetChem’s exceptional flattener.

MetChem 6836 is dummy-free electroless nickel, two component make-up, and two component replenishment 1:1. Very easy to use and maintain. It performs at the same level as cadmium- and lead-free electroless nickel in rate, phosphorus content, hardness, and brightness.
